1. For efficiency, the work triangle (the space between the sink, refrigerator, and stove) should measure 26’ or less with no single side longer than 9’, or less than 4’.

2. In kitchens smaller than 150 sq. ft., opt for at least 13’ of base cabinets, 12’ of wall cabinets, and 11’ of countertop. In kitchens which are larger, go with at least 16’ of base cabinets, 15 1/2’ of wall cabinets, and 16 1/2’ of countertop.3. For convenience, plan work aisles to be at least 42” wide for one cook, and at least 48” wide in multi-cook kitchens.

4. Specify a minimum of 24” of counter space on one side of the sink and at least 18” on the other.

5. To create the most accessible landing for unloading groceries, allow at least 15” of counter space on the handle side of a standard refrigerator; on both sides if it’s a side-by-side model. Or include a landing area directly across from the refrigerator, but no more than 48” away.

6. For cleanup ease, install the dishwasher within 36” of one edge of the sink and allow for at least 21” of standing room next to it.

7. For microwaves and ovens, provide at least 15 “ of counter space nearby, at least 16” deep.

8. For optimum clearance, no entry, appliance, or cabinet doors should interfere with another.

9. For comfort and to help avoid repetitive-motion injury, plan for work counters of different heights; between 28 and 36” off the floor (easier for chopping and seated-use access), and between 36 and 46” for general tasks (higher counters accommodate taller cooks).

10. To install a cabinet unit above the cook top, make sure the clearance is at least 24” for a fireproof surface, 30” for an unprotected surface.

Designing a kitchen is as much a science as it is an art. Knowing the recommended measurements to use when planning the project can make all the difference in the final outcome.

For many, choosing the right colors for the ceiling, trim and walls when painting a room for the first time can be a daunting household task. But, just like learning how to cook a great meal, creating the perfect room can be achieved with the right ingredients and a good recipe.

“Spicing up the home with color is a great way to brighten the indoors-but the actual color selection process often can be quite overwhelming,” said Barbara Richardson, director of color marketing for ICI Paints and a licensed interior designer. “Follow these simple, sensible tips, and you’ll paint like a pro to create a delectable treat of a colorful new home–and have fun in the process.”Consult a color “cookbook”

You wouldn’t attempt to whip up a gourmet meal without consulting a cookbook or an experienced chef. Similarly, take advantage of the design assistance that is available to you. For computer-savvy do-it-yourselves, free design advice is available with the simple click of a computer mouse.

Color chips of shades chosen online can be ordered and sent free of charge. Since it’s preferable to make paint selections surrounded by the furniture, lighting and accessories of a room, reviewing color chips in the comfort of home provides the extra confidence needed to proceed with a paint project.

Do a tastes test

It’s important to see before you believe, especially when it comes to paint colors. So, how do you experiment with paint colors and avoid the stress and mess?

Try the self-adhesive, repositionable color swatches called Glidden Color@Home Peel & Stick paint samples. Measuring 33/4″ x 6″, these swatches are available in six collections of 10 colors each and include coordinating shades for walls, accents and trim.

Simply place swatches on a wall, then remove and restick as many times as necessary to select the best colors to coordinate with furniture and accessories.

Don’t leave out essentials

For the best topcoat results, most projects will require a coat of primer first. A primer called Gripper Grey, for example, was specifically developed for use under dark or vibrant paints. These primers use shades of grey to create a better foundation that enhances the true richness of popular topcoat colors while saving time and money.

“Most DIYers don’t think twice about applying deep colors, such as dark reds, greens or blues, over a white primer,” said Richardson. “Only after the paint has dried do they realize that the primer affects the intensity of the topcoat. As a result, more time and money are spent on applying additional layers to achieve the desired color.”

Choose a delicious topping

A fresh coat of spotless ceiling paint will surely put the icing on the cake. One way to avoid the frustration and anxiety of missed spots, multiple coats and waiting for paint to dry is with a ceiling paint with EZ Track Technology. The product goes on pink and dries to a smooth, bright white in less than 30 minutes.

With this innovative paint from Glidden, tackling a ceiling can be done whenever it’s convenient–in low light, on overcast days or even at night when the kids are asleep.

By following a recipe for painting success, do-it-yourselves can create a room that will be savored for years to come.

Creating a colorful home can boost your family’s physical and mental well-being.

We all love to decorate our house in our own way, putting in our personal touch in all the rooms and in every corner. We should not ignore the floors as well. It not only enhances the beauty of the room but also serves as a good place to sit and enjoy.

Weaving was first started in 6000 B.C. Excavations near the Caspian Sea have proved this fact, and rugs were made around the same time as man learnt weaving. The first rugs were made of rough skin and were used for cave protection. Egyptians were making excellent rugs well in 3rd millennium B.C.

Rugs can be classified in many types according to the material used, the method of making them, the use they are put to, etc. According to the material used, rugs can be simply classified as being wool rugs, silk rugs etc, and they can be classified as per the use they are put to like, Prayer Rugs, Door Rugs, Sleeping Rugs etc.

Wool rugs have become very popular these days among others available. They can breathe new life and beauty into your home without the hassle and expense of a major renovation. They are one of the most desired home luxuries in the world. They are made from the oldest textile fibers – wool, and as wool has always stood the test of time because of its unique natural properties, rugs made of wool have the same benefits. Though there are many other fibers, still nothing can beat the natural properties of wool.

Types of wool rugs:

Wool rugs are of different types ranging from traditional, oriental, Persian, machine made, hand made, and contemporary. Each stands as a masterpiece on its own. The quality and prices of these wool rugs could be different depending on the type of wool, as there are about 200 varieties of sheep. The fiber would vary considerably in texture across the body of an individual sheep, as well as differences based on the sex of the sheep. It also depends on the nutrition of the sheep, their age and also general health.

The fiber for the wool rugs is selected for durability and long wearing, and is generally harsh in consistency; unlike the soft and delicate fibers used for making sweaters and gloves. The texture of the fiber is dependant on the level of scratchiness that is used in the finished rug, and the quality of finished fiber also depends on the manner it is processed by the rug producers.

Why choose wool rugs?

Though there are rugs made of other fibers, wool stands out from all. Wool usually sets the standard for fine carpet because of the excellent design and the performance. Wool accepts dye to its core, producing colors of depth and long lasting beauty. It is possible that you may have to spend a good amount of money, as wool rugs cost more than the normally available synthetic ones; but wool rugs offer long-term investment returns via enhanced durability, and they are quite easy to maintain.

In terms of wearability, wool rugs have natural resistance to any abrasion and it keeps its original look and feel, be it the color or texture, longer than other fibers. You would have no problem cleaning them as wool is not soiled very easily and can be cleaned readily. Using the vacuum cleaner can remove dirt on the surface and any ground-in dirt. Wool rugs require less frequent and less rigorous wet cleaning than synthetics with responsive spot cleaning and routine vacuuming. Wool rugs can be of great help in keeping the temperature warm or cool depending on the season, as wool is known to keep the environment warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Wool rugs save energy by reducing heat loss through floors.

Wool rugs are available in different colors and designs. Usually it depends on the type of fibers as to what designs are made. So if you are looking for recreating your house, don’t look past a nice rug. It will add a touch of beauty to your room and you can relax and chill in your room while other people can admire.
